Chris Evans at the Chelsea Flower Show 2017

This May for the first time ever we uprooted The Chris Evans Breakfast Show from Wogan House and planted it for one day only at The RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

It was all to celebrate a new collaboration between BBC Radio 2 and The RHS. For the first time ever there were five Radio 2 gardens at Chelsea – the Radio 2 Feel Good Gardens – celebrating 50 years of Radio 2. These five gardens were designed to showcase how plants can enrich and indulge each of the five human senses: sight, sound, taste, smell and touch. The gardens were named after five Radio 2 presenters, each of whom played a part in their design, plus help from some special guests.

My colleague Meera and I were put in charge of leading the project back in March, with two months to organise the OB – despite neither of us having ever been to the show before! With two weeks to go, disaster struck as Meera was forced to take time of work due to illness. It became a bit of a scramble to get everything ready in time but on the 22nd May we arrived at the Royal Hospital Chelsea at 5am, ready to go on air at 6:30am.

There were many highlights in the show as Chris got to wander around the 11 acre site, meeting many of the show’s amazing designers and gardeners. We learned how to use orchids as a natural shower curtain, saw some spectacular sculptures and met the famous Cactus Couple! Once we arrived at our amazing Feel Good Gardens we were joined by some fellow Radio 2 presenters – Jo Whiley, Jeremy Vine and Anneka Rice, as well as special guest Mary Berry! To top it all off Chris even got to plant the very last plant at Chelsea!

What a great start to the summer with the brilliant breakfast production team!
